Precautions when using Steinberg audio interfaces with VST Rack Pro

[Update on May 2022]

Installing the TOOLS V2.0.0 or later for the audio interfaces listed below will solve the issues described.

AXR4T, AXR4U

UR22C, UR24C, UR44C, UR816C

If you wish to install the VST Rack Pro software in the same environment with any of these audio interfaces, please use the TOOLS V2.0.0 or later.

Using any of Steinberg audio interfaces listed, installing the VST Rack software in the same environment may cause the issues described below.

- AXR4T, AXR4U

- UR22C, UR24C, UR44C, UR816C

- UR-RT2, UR-RT4, UR242, UR44, UR28M, UR824

If you take advantage of the user preset function with VST3 plug-ins and DSP effects that come with the Steinberg audio interface, especially if you frequently share the user presets between the VST3 plug-ins and DSP effects, we recommend that you separate the environment in which you use the audio interface from the environment in which you use VST Rack Pro if possible.

There are no problems with the operation of VST Rack Pro alone, and no other problems with the Steinberg audio interface.

In addition, we plan to resolve this issue with a future software update.

#1

Symptom

User presets cannot be shared between the built-in DSP effects used in the Cubase series and the VST3 plug-in.

(Example) User presets created and saved with REV-X inserted on the Cubase series inspector screen could be read directly from the REV-X VST3 plug-in inserted with the Cubase series Mix Console. But this becomes impossible.

UR22C, UR24C, UR44C, UR816C, UR-RT2, UR-RT4, UR242, UR44, UR28M, UR824

REV-X

Cause

The vendor name for both the built-in DSP effects on the Steinberg audio interface and the VST3 plug-ins bundled with the Steinberg audio interface is Steinberg, but the VST3 plug-ins bundled with VST Rack Pro have newer version numbers and their vendor name is Yamaha.

Therefore, the vendor names after installing VST Rack Pro are as follows on Mac and Windows. On the Cubase series, if the vendor name is different between the DSP effect and the VST3 plug-in, the user preset cannot be shared, which causes the problem.

[Mac]

DSP effect: Steinberg

VST3 plug-in: Yamaha

[Windows]

DSP effect: Steinberg

VST3 plug-in: Yamaha and Steinberg coexist, but which one is loaded depends on the application.

Workaround

We're sorry, but there is currently no workaround.

Note:

For the DSP effects inserted into the dspMixFx application for each model, you can select where to save or load the user presets with [Save] or [Open] in the [File] menu.

So it is possible to share the user presets with newly installed VST3 plug-ins with Yamaha vendor name.

#2

Symptom

User presets for VST3 plug-ins that should have been created and saved before cannot be read.

(Example) User presets created and saved with the EQ601 VST3 plug-in included with AXR4U cannot be loaded after installing VST Rack Pro.

Cause

The vendor name for the VST3 plug-ins bundled with the Steinberg audio interface is Steinberg, but the VST3 plug-ins bundled with VST Rack Pro have newer version numbers and their vendor name is Yamaha.

Therefore, the vendor names after installing VST Rack Pro are as follows on Mac and Windows.

[Mac]

VST3 plug-in: Yamaha only (The plug-ins with vendor name “Steinberg” will be removed.)

[Windows]

VST3 plug-in: Yamaha and Steinberg coexist, but which one is loaded depends on the application.

User presets cannot be shared by VST3 plug-ins with different vendor names, so user presets previously created and saved with VST3 plug-ins with Steinberg vendor name will no longer be displayed on Mac.

On Windows, the user presets displayed will vary depending on the app.

Workaround

[Mac]

By copying the user preset files stored in Folder 1 to Folder 2, these previously created user presets will now be visible on new plug-ins with the vendor name Yamaha.

Folder 1:

/Users/<User Name>/Library/Audio/Presets/Steinberg Media Technologies/<Plug-in Name>

Folder 2:

/Users/<User Name>/Library/Audio/Presets/Yamaha/<Plug-in Name>

[Windows]

Since the vendor name of the plug-in to be loaded varies depending on the application, it is necessary to always synchronize the user preset files stored in the following two folders.

Folders used by the plug-ins with vendor name Steinberg:

C:\Users\<User Name>\Documents\VST3 Presets\Steinberg Media Technologies\<Plug-in Name>

Folders used by the plug-ins with vendor name Yamaha:

C:\Users\<User Name>\Documents\VST3 Presets\Yamaha\<Plug-in Name>
